Our patients are at the centre of what we do. There is nothing more heart-warming for our team than when a former patient gets in touch and wants to visit us. If you, or a family member, has been a patient of ours and would like to get in touch, we would love to hear from you. Some patients share their story to help raise awareness of our work.

I was visiting a close friend of mine in August 2020. I was heading back and had a head on collision with another car. It was combined speed of over 100mph. I would have lost a leg and could have died if it weren't for the team from KSS.

It was a lovely, sunny day; great conditions for paragliding, with light thermals building. I’ve been doing paragliding for 24 years. It’s the simplest form of aviation that exists; you fly using a fabric wing, which keeps its form by the air pressure going into it. I think everyone wants to fly, there’s still a bit of the ancestral bird in us.

I remember the day vividly. I had just returned from a business trip the night before and was working at home that day. Thank God, otherwise the outcome could have been very different.

Peter Icke sadly died in September 2020. His decision to become an organ donor helped to save three other lives, a true testament to the way Peter lived his life, doing as much as possible to help other people. This is a tribute to Peter, a man of many talents who had a terrific sense of humour, and who was highly respected by all who knew him.

I am a keen mountain biker and I regularly cycle in the South Downs National Park. I live in Eastbourne close to the foot of the Downs. On Saturday 6th June 2020 I set off early on my electric bike and headed for Friston Forest via the Long Man of Wilmington. This was my first ride on the electric bike and I decided to extend my ride over the Seven Sisters as I would not ordinarily do so on my manual bike. I was eager to get home soon as the weather was about to change.

Our two-year-old son was saved by KSS in 2018. It was coincidentally just a month after we signed up to take part in their lottery scheme. We were at our local petrol station and my fiancé Michael joked as he got back in the car after registering, saying ‘I’ll probably never use the Air Ambulance but it’s a good cause so I thought I’d sign up anyway’.

I was heading down the Pevensey bypass and suddenly, I saw a black car coming straight towards me on my side of the road. It was overtaking, which a lot of cars do in that area because it’s a wide road. There was plenty of space, but suddenly the car clipped the one it was overtaking and came straight at me, hitting me head on. I heard the bang before I became unconscious.

It was Father’s Day, 2016. I was due to hop on a train up to London with my wife and two kids, to see the premier of ‘The Secret Life of Pets’. Our train wasn’t due for another hour, so thought I’d go out for a quick ride on my bike, whilst the family finished getting ready. But, I ended up not returning home for another nine weeks – not quite the Father’s Day I’d planned.
