Meet the Trustees
Paul Barrett is the managing director of a family owned motor dealership group in Kent. The group was founded in 1902 by his great grandfather as a cycle repair business and adding motor car sales & repairs in 1904. He is the fourth generation of the family to be involved.
Paul was awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City of Canterbury in January 2015 and is a Kent Ambassador. He is actively involved with a number of local organisations and is also a trustee of the Canterbury Cathedral Trust and Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury.
Paul is an enthusiastic cyclist and founder member of the Canterbury Velo Club. In 2012 he was part of a group who cycled from Olympia in Greece to the Olympic Stadium in London to raise funds for Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex.
Caitlin Blewett is the Head of Digital at Deloitte LLP, and brings a wealth of experience in marketing, advertising, digital and technology. In her current role she leads on the firm’s digital strategy to drive increased impact and effectiveness of the firm’s marketing. Caitlin has also worked on the agency side, developing brands, cultivating innovation and creating award-winning marketing programmes for leading corporations around the world.
Helen Bowcock, Chair
Dr Helen Bowcock OBE, DL served as High Sheriff of Surrey in 2013/14. Through a family charity, The Hazelhurst Trust, she supports a number of local causes and is a member of the Advancement Committee of the University of Surrey. She is author of a report entitled Hidden Surrey: Why local giving is needed to strengthen our communities published in 2009. She was a founding director of a family software company and managed its HR through a period of rapid growth. As a mature student she completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of Kent and is originally a graduate of Durham University.
Barney Burgess served consumer businesses for McKinsey & Co before joining Tesco plc where he ran their grocery home shopping business and was a commercial director. His achievements included introducing the grocery ‘Click and Collect’ service to the UK. He is now a partner in Hattington Investment Partners, a private equity partnership. Significantly, in 2015, he was airlifted by Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex and brings enormous passion and commitment to the charity which saved his life.
Andrew Farrant is the Senior Partner of White & Sons, an independent firm of Surrey based estate agents and surveyors, founded in 1817. He is responsible for the management, direction and development of the firm, supported by five Partners and over sixty staff. Andrew’s involvement with the charity started in 2006 as a sponsor and organising committee member of the Air Aid Ball, and he is now Chair of the Surrey Board Committee of the charity in addition to his role as a Trustee. From 2006 onwards he has also been a dedicated fundraiser, taking part in 10k runs and half marathons for the charity. Andrew has always lived in Surrey and is married to Louisa with two teenaged children.
James Loudon was employed by Blue Circle Industries PLC for 25 years, with the last 14 as Group Finance Director. Since then he has been Chairman of Caledonia Investments PLC and a non-executive director of two other public companies in the industrial sector. He has also been Deputy Chairman of the Governors of the University of Greenwich and Chairman of its Finance Committee. He is currently a Trustee of a number of charities and is on a prison Independent Monitoring Board. He was High Sheriff of Kent in 2004/5. He is Chairman of the Finance and Resources Committee of Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex.
Surgeon Commodore Stuart Millar
Stuart Millar is Head of Medical Operational Capability for the UK’s Defence Medical Services, a post he took up in July 2017. In this role, he is responsible for providing high level medical support to operations, both now and in the future, and along the whole patient pathway, from point of wounding to transfer back to the UK via deployed hospital care. He oversees capability development in terms of manpower, training, equipment and policy, linking them together to make sure patients get the most effective and safest care possible. He joined the Royal Navy in 1988 (the third generation of his family to be a Naval Medical Officer) and trained as a General Practitioner. He has deployed on various operations, both at sea and on land, and in support of all three Services.
Tim Oakes, a qualified Chartered Accountant, worked for Unilever for 30 years in a broad array of roles in Finance, IT, Supply Chain and General Management. A career spanning the UK, Australia, and Singapore culminated in a final position as Managing Director of Unilever Korea based in Seoul. He subsequently ran a Private Family Office for 6 years with responsibility for finances, investments and staff. Since 2010, as MD of Red House Foods, he has been developing and growing a gluten-free food company which supplies national supermarkets. He enjoys his golf and continues to play cricket locally in Surrey, albeit with a little less pace than in his earlier years.
Wendy Simkins has spent the last twenty years living in Kent. She has three grown up daughters, one of whom ran the Flora London Marathon for the Kent Air Ambulance, as it was known then, in 2001. Wendy worked part time for a company specialising in maritime security where she was responsible for the training of security officers on cruise ships. She has worked with a number of charities and was a governor of a grammar school in Ashford. Wendy considers it a privilege to have been appointed to the Board of Trustees where she has special responsibility to the volunteers.
Patrick is an employment lawyer and Partner at TWM Solicitors, based in Guildford. He was Managing Partner of the firm from 2000 to 2005 and again from 2009 to 2013. He has been involved with Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex since 2011 when the charity was nominated as TWM’s principal charity to support - a position it has retained ever since.
