A New Era

Nearly four weeks into our enforced period of lockdown, there has been much discussion of how we are all adjusting to what is becoming our ‘new normal’. This is a defining event of our times and as such, I would argue that the term ‘new normal’, downplays the incredible level of ongoing change we all need to react to as individuals, organisations, communities and as a society, to ensure our survival.

National Unity in a Time of Crisis

Like the many millions of people who applauded the NHS and all key workers, I am incredibly thankful for and inspired by all NHS staff and what they do for our country, especially in our hour of need at this extremely challenging time. The news last night that our Prime Minister is now in intensive care highlights both how indiscriminate and debilitating this virus is, and the incredible need for both resources and highly trained staff to give everyone their best possible chance of recovery.

The Power of Volunteering

Last week, the NHS launched their Community Volunteer Responders scheme which was described as an absolutely critical step to coordinate a movement of people coming together to support both our NHS and the most vulnerable people in our communities. Already, over 750,000 individuals have put themselves forward, in addition to the thousands who are already showing kindness and support by devoting their time to voluntary activities.
