Virtual dance extravaganza raises thousands

The whole school community of Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys came together last week in a virtual fancy dress dance extravaganza to raise funds for Air Ambulance Kent Surrey and Sussex.

The school were due to hold an annual charity Fun Run, but they decided not to let social distancing thwart their efforts and instead adapted the event to a virtual dance-off, opening up the event to the whole school including students, their families and even staff.

All of the students and staff were sent a video of a Sixth Form dancer performing a Hip Hop two-step to the sound of Pump it up by Endor and then filmed or photographed their own interpretation along with the track.

So far, the students have smashed through their fundraising target of £500, raising almost £3,000. They hope that more people enjoying the video will make a contribution, to make this a memorable year for all the right reasons.

“We were determined to make our final fundraising activity count this year and we thought it would cheer everyone up to join together remotely in a fun experience”, said Deputy Head Boy, Gabriel Kupper.

The school chose Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex as their charity of the year for the academic year 2019-2020. Excluding the dance-off, Year 13 have raised £2,775 so far.

“Throughout the year I have been proud to see our Sixth Formers run various activities to raise vital funds for their chosen charity. It is a testament to their determination that they have found a fun and uplifting way to end the year’s fundraising”, said Headteacher, Amanda Simpson.

“At such a difficult time for us all, it means even more that our supporters are still thinking of the charity and fundraising in their fantastic ways – it really does mean so very much to us”, said Air Ambulance Community Fundraiser, Sarita Taneja.
